During May of this year we went to 14 prisons in Thailand.  In terms of the physical locations, we went to just 13 prisons, but at one prison they brought the men and women together on the men’s side.  We didn’t go into the women’s side, but those women who attended our meeting took the message back to their side.

In 4 of these prisons we had a mixed audience of believers and unbelievers (at least 5 believers in each of those groups).  In 4 of those prisons, the majority of those who attended were believers, but young believers with questions.  And, in 6 of those prisons, the majority of our audience were unbelievers.  The size of the audience ranged from about 20 to over 100, with most places having at least 50-60 in attendance, so we met with probably more than 800 precious souls.

We are ready to go to either men’s or women’s prisons, and sometimes we don’t know until we get there whether they will send us to the men’s or the women’s side, or to both, but during this month it was very balanced– we went 7 men’s prisons, and 7 women’s prisons.

Short Introduction to our Family

I met Khae on a bus in Bangkok back in 2006, right after the Thai/Indonesian tsunami.  We kept in contact by email and phone.  She became a Christian about a year later, and we got married in 2007.  After eight years of marriage we finally had our first child—Micahberekiah.  He’s now 11 years old.  When Micah was about two years old, we became guardians for Isaiah, who is from a Lahu village.  His parents were both in prison at the time for drug related crimes, and he was living with his grandmother who was a drug user, and Isaiah at age 9 was not going to school.  We got permission from his Mom to become his guardians.

Isaiah was 9 years old when he first came to stay with us, not knowing any English, and barely knowing some Thai, and only a little Lahu.  He stayed with us for 6 years before going to Bible School, and is now very comfortable with English, fluent in Thai, and working on getting back up to speed with his Lahu language.  And, he just graduated from his 3-year Bible college.

Back to the Prison Trip

Isaiah came with us for the first week of this prison trip, and came with us into 4 prisons.  He shared a short message at each place which was very good.  Then, he went back to his Bible college where he’s a volunteer now, and working towards getting his driver’s license, while also improving his Lahu language and studying Korean, and finishing up on his GED degree.

Micah also came with us into 4 prisons, though they were different prisons from the ones Isaiah went into.  Micah played the violin or played a guitar song, and recited some Bible verses at each place.

Khae and I went into all of these prisons.  Khae usually shares some short, but good messages at each place, and we have various songs that reinforce the messages.

Evangelistic Messages

If we go to a place for the first time, or if the majority of the audience are unbelievers, we will focus on creation messages and songs, then speak about God’s holy standard and repentance and the grace offered to us through the cross of Jesus, and the resurrection.

God is our Creator, and He has the power to recreate anyone, who repents and puts their faith in Jesus.

While sharing on creation there are many funny and absurd points we make related to the non-viability of evolution.  The audience often has not thought of these before, and often times whether men or women, erupt into laughter.  They come to realize that even a bird or a fish is more HIGH TECH than an AI computer, because people can make those, but the smartest people in the world cannot make a single bird or fish!

Also, we talk about the differences between people and monkeys—monkeys don’t have morality—there are no police monkeys, or lawyer monkeys, or monkey courtrooms or prisons!  God has given people freedom to choose good or evil, but we are responsible for our choices.  Then, we share the good news of how God can give us a fresh start and we can even be reconciled to God against whom we have sinned, and become His children.

We give them all the opportunity to pray to repent of their sins and put their faith in Jesus to save them.  Many do pray.

Messages for Believers

We also have many messages for those who are young believers, to help them steer clear of the prosperity gospel, or other false doctrines; and to love the truth instead, encouraging them to study God’s Word.  During this trip, for believers, we focused on messages from the book of Daniel and Matthew.

This was probably our biggest trip of the year.  Usually on a trip like this we would go to just about 7-10 prisons in two weeks, and we go to other prisons closer to Chiang Mai on shorter trips.  Now that we’re back home we’re focusing on teaching the children who come to study with us on Saturdays and Sundays, while also preparing new messages for the prisons.

Here’s a picture of Khae, Isaiah and I inside one prison.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Grace and Peace in Jesus,

Scott, Khae, Isaiah, and Micahberekiah.
