Identifying the Antichrist

The Man of Lawlessness, the Beast, the Son of Destruction

Introduction

The Bible does not leave us in the dark about the Antichrist. Scripture gives us a detailed prophetic portrait so God’s people can recognize him when he appears. He is not just “a bad guy” – he is the ultimate counterfeit Christ, empowered by Satan, who will deceive the world and persecute the saints before Christ returns in victory.

Key Title Verses

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 – “The man of lawlessness… the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god…”
  • Revelation 13:1-2 – The Beast rising from the sea.

1. His Identity & Nature

  • He is a Beast – Fierce, brutal, and destructive (Dan 7:7; Rev 13:1-2; 17:8, 11).

  • He is a King – The final ruler of a revived empire (Dan 7:23-24; 8:23; Rev 17:9-10).
  • He has a Limited Time – Given 42 months (3½ years) of authority (Rev 13:5).

Added Insight: He is the “little horn” who uproots three kings and becomes dominant (Dan 7:8, 24).

2. His Power & Character

  • Satanically Animated – The dragon (Satan) gives him his power, throne, and great authority (Rev 13:2).
  • A Conqueror – He subdues kings and nations through military and political power (Dan 7:24; 8:24; 11:40-44; Rev 13:7).
  • Despicable yet Successful – Morally vile yet rises through intrigue and flattery (Dan 8:24; 11:21, 36).
  • Self-Promoting & Self-Deifying – Exalts himself above God, sits in the temple declaring himself God (Dan 7:11, 25; 8:11, 25; 11:36-37; 2 Thess 2:4).
  • Spiritually Disturbed – Does not regard the true God or desire of women (Dan 11:37-39; 2 Thess 2:3).
  • Master of Deception – Uses lies, signs, and false peace to deceive (Dan 8:12, 23-25; 11:23-24; 2 Thess 2:9-10; 1 John 2:18-19).
  • Performs Signs & Wonders – False miracles to authenticate his claims (2 Thess 2:9; Rev 13:3, 13-14).
  • Worshiped by the World – The whole earth marvels and worships him (Rev 13:4, 8; 17:8).

  • Breaks Covenants – Makes and then violates a treaty with Israel (Dan 9:27; 11:23).
  • Commits the Abomination of Desolation – Stops sacrifices and sets up the “abomination” in the temple (Dan 8:11-13; 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; Matt 24:15; 2 Thess 2:4).
  • Blasphemes the Godhead – Speaks against the Most High (Dan 7:25; 11:36; Rev 13:5-6; 1 John 2:22; 4:3; 2 John 7).
  • Takes Residence in Israel – Plants his palace in Jerusalem (Dan 11:45).

4. His Kingdom & Allies

  • Brings Temporary False Peace & Prosperity – Before sudden destruction (1 Thess 5:3).
  • Ultimately a Tool of God’s Will – God sovereignly uses even the Antichrist’s evil for His purposes (Rev 17:17).

Added Insight: His empire will be a revived form of the Roman Empire (Dan 7:7-8; Rev 17:9-11) – ten kings who give their power to the Beast.

Conclusion & Warning

The Antichrist will be the greatest deceiver and persecutor in history, but his time is short. He is already restrained (2 Thess 2:6-7), and his end is certain:

“The beast was seized, and with him the false prophet… these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire…” (Revelation 19:20)

Application

  • Stay rooted in Scripture – So you are not deceived.
  • Do not fear – Christ has already won.
  • Live holy and watchful – “The coming of the Lord is near” (James 5:8).

Closing Verse

“For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth…” (2 Thessalonians 2:7-8)
